Masonry is one of the highest-demand trades in the Gulf and European construction sectors. However, the standards for quality are much stricter than typical local construction in India.

1. The Block Mason Test In the Gulf, buildings are primarily constructed using hollow concrete blocks, not standard red bricks. - **The Task:** You will be asked to build a short block wall (e.g., 4 blocks high, 3 blocks wide) featuring a corner. - **What they check:** The examiner will use a "Plumb Bob" (Saahul) to ensure the wall is perfectly straight vertically. They will use a spirit level to ensure every row is perfectly horizontal. If your mortar joints are messy or uneven, you lose points.

2. The Plastering Test - **The Task:** You must apply a coat of plaster to an existing block wall. - **What they check:** Smoothness, even thickness, and zero sagging. They will place a long aluminum straight-edge (Fanti) against your plaster. If there are gaps between the straight-edge and the wall, your plaster is uneven and you will fail.

3. The Tile Mason Test Tile masons are paid slightly more because it is finishing work. - **The Task:** Laying floor or wall tiles in a small grid. - **What they check:** You must leave exact, equal gaps using tile spacers. The tiles must be perfectly leveled with no raised edges (lippage). You will also be tested on cutting tiles accurately using a manual tile cutter or grinder.

Essential Tips for the Day - **Don't Rush the Mortar Mix:** If your cement/sand mix is too dry or too wet, your blocks will slip or won't stick. Take the time to get the consistency right. - **Keep Your Workspace Clean:** Gulf employers hate messy sites. Clean up excess mortar immediately with a sponge or trowel.
