1. The 6G Pipe Welding Test (The Gold Standard) If you are applying for a high-paying pipe welder position, you will almost certainly take a **6G position test**. - **The Setup:** Two pieces of carbon steel or stainless steel pipe are tacked together with a specific gap and fixed at a 45-degree angle. **You cannot rotate the pipe.** - **The Task:** You must weld the joint from the bottom up, meaning you will weld in vertical, overhead, and flat positions simultaneously. - **The Process:** Usually, you will use GTAW (TIG) for the "Root Pass" (the inner weld) and SMAW (Arc/Stick) for the "Fill and Cap" (the outer layers).

2. Visual Inspection (What they check immediately) Before they even X-ray your weld, the examiner will do a strict visual check.
